Justice and Artificial Intelligence Tracker (JAI-T)
Background
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming public safety, from AI-powered chatbots that assist the public to systems used for detection and analysis in law enforcement. Despite this growth, there is no centralized resource that clearly documents how AI tools are being used in practice across the criminal justice system. Existing trackers and research focus primarily on legislation or policy, offering limited insight into real-world deployment. As AI innovation often outpaces regulation, this gap leaves practitioners and policymakers without timely, actionable information on current applications and emerging trends.
Purpose
The Justice AI Tracker (JAI-T) will serve as a comprehensive, centralized resource for identifying, categorizing, and analyzing AI-driven tools used in public safety. With a primary focus on law enforcement, JAI-T is designed to make AI applications more visible, comparable, and assessable by creating a shared analytical framework. The tracker will empower law enforcement leaders, policymakers, technologists, and researchers to better understand where and how AI tools are being deployed, and what implications they hold for public safety, governance, and civil liberties.
Outcome
JAI-T will be the first resource of its kind to provide an up-to-date, actionable overview of AI use in public safety. By increasing transparency and enabling systematic comparison across jurisdictions, the tracker will support more informed policy development, responsible investment, and ethical governance of AI in the justice system. Ultimately, JAI-T will help bridge the gap between rapid technological innovation and public accountability, strengthening decision-making and trust in AI-enabled public safety practices.
